American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification
This is a recertification option for currently certified lifeguards. Review skills include water rescues, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and first aid. The course incorporates a blended learning format with online training sessions, classroom skills and water rescue activities.
Lifeguard Recertification Policy
Per Red Cross guidelines only currently certified Lifeguards may take the Review course. If any certifications have expired you must take the full Lifeguard Course. The Red Cross is no longer allowing Lifeguards to challenge the course.
Lifeguard Recertification Prerequisites
Lifeguard Recertification participants must provide proof of valid Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications and pass the precourse: swim 300 yards (12 lengths of a 25 yard pool) without stopping using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes using legs only, and retrieve a 10-lb brick from 7 feet deep and swim 20 yards with the weight, using legs only and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute 40 seconds.
Lifeguard Certifications Issued
American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer - all valid for 2 years.

Online Training Session
At least one (1) day prior to the class date you must complete online training session thru the American Red Cross Learning Center. The Red Cross charges $28 for the online session which is in addition to the training fees charged by Safe Swim. How to Complete Online Training Sessions

What to Bring to Class
Lifeguard Recertification Forms; valid copy of your current certifications including: Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer; Bathing suit and towel; a pen or pencil and paper for notes; and a CPR pocket mask or participants may purchase a mask during the class for $15.
Printing your Lifeguard Certification
Approximately 5 business days after you have successfully completed all the course requirements your Lifeguard certification will be available for print through the American Red Cross Learning Center. Steps to print your Lifeguard Certification
Q. Who is eligible to participate in a Lifeguarding Review course?
A. The Lifeguarding Review course is designed for individuals with a current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED or Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate to recertify every 2 years. Instructors may also use the Lifeguarding Review course outline as a guide to update current lifeguards to the updated Lifeguard program skills.
Q. Can I recertify if my certification has expired?
A. No. Per Red Cross guidelines only currently certified Lifeguards may take the Review course. If any certifications have expired you must take the full Lifeguard Course.
Q. Is there a crossover course for basic-level lifeguards certified/licensed in lifeguard training by another training agency, such as the YMCA, Ellis and Associates or StarGuard?
A. No. Individuals must successfully complete the full Lifeguarding course to receive certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
VISITORS - Only registered participants are allowed on the pool deck or in the class rooms during training. All visitors including parents must wait in the parking lot.
REFUNDS - No refunds will be issued once course fees have been submitted. In the event that a participant is unable to pass the prerequisites or final exams the participant may transfer to a class at a later date (if available) for a transfer fee of $25. If a participant is absent from any scheduled class days or times, the participant will not be offered a transfer or refund of any kind.
TRANSFERS - The class transfer fee is $25 and registered participants are required to notify Safe Swim at least 48 hours prior to the first class date that you are currently registered for in order to be eligible to transfer.
