WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION

American Red Cross Training

The Water Safety Instructor certification course trains WSI candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants progress.

WSI Training Course

Must be 15 years & older and be able to swim at a level 4 or higher and demonstrate the following Swim Skills:

  • Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke – 25 yards
  • Butterfly – 15 yards
  • Back float for 1 minute (floating or sculling)
  • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Complete the required online course before the first day of class.
  • Pass the WSI swimming skills test.
  • Attend and participate in all class sessions and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
  • Successfully pass final written exam with a minimum grade of 80%.
  • Upon successful completion of the WSI class, participants will receive American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate (WSI) valid for 2 years.
  • The certificate will be emailed to you from the Red Cross with in 2 business days after completing the class (please check your spam folder if you do not get the email).
  • If you do not receive an email visit redcross.org/getcertificate and enter your email address.
  • If you rare unable to locate your certificate please call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) and select the prompts for Health and Safety Training.

The following items are REQUIRED for the class – Links to all course manuals and class forms will be emailed to WSI candidates upon registering for a class. If you do not receive the email please contact our office at 949-420-0804:

  • Course Manuals (digital or printed copies)
  • Class Forms (printed copies)
  • Water Safety Instructor online course completion report (printed or photo proof)
  • Bathing suit, goggles, towel and a dry change of clothes, sunscreen and bottled water
  • A pen or pencil and paper for notes

Class Transfers – The class transfer fee is $50 and registered participants are required to submit a Transfer Request online at least 48 hours prior to the original class date. All training must be completed by May 25, 2024 which is our last WSI class for 2024.

No Refunds – ALL SALES ARE FINAL and No refunds will be issued once course fees have been submitted. In the event that a participant is unable to pass the prerequisites or final exams the participant may transfer to a class at a later date (if available). If a participant is absent from any scheduled class days or times, the participant will not be offered a transfer or refund of any kind.

No Visitors – Only registered participants are allowed on the pool deck or in the classrooms during training. All visitors including parents must wait in the parking lot.

Cancelled Classes – Safe Swim reserves the right to cancel classes as needed. In the event a class is canceled registered participants will be offered a transfer to a different class free of charge or a full refund of the class fee.
