Water Safety Instructor Certification

American Red Cross WSI Certification

The Water Safety Instructor course certifies swimming instructors to teach Red Cross swimming, diving and water safety programs.

Class Prerequisites

  • Minimum age of 16 years old
  • Demonstrate proficiency in six strokes: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, and butterfly – 25 yards per stroke
  • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Back float for 1 minute

Certification Requirements

  • Complete the online American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Orientation
  • Complete the online Water Safety Instructor Course
  • Attend all class sessions
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
  • Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam

Certificates Issued

Successful Water Safety Instructor candidates will receive an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification valid for 2 years

WSI Certification

Required Online Course

Prior to the in-class date, all participants must complete an online course thru the Red Cross Learning Center for $35, which in addition to the class fee. Information on completing the online course will be emailed to you once you register for a class.

Program Policies

Class Transfers – The class transfer fee is $30 and registered participants are required to submit a Transfer Request online at least 48 hours prior to the original class date.

No Refunds – Training deposits are nonrefundable and No refunds will be issued once course fees have been submitted. In the event that a participant is unable to pass the prerequisites or final exams the participant may transfer to a class at a later date (if available). If a participant is absent from any scheduled class days or times, the participant will not be offered a transfer or refund of any kind.

No Visitors – Only registered participants are allowed on the pool deck or in the classrooms during training. All visitors including parents must wait in the parking lot.

Cancelled Classes – Safe Swim reserves the right to cancel classes as needed. In the event a class is canceled registered participants will be offered a transfer to a different class free of charge or a full refund of the training deposit.
