American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Re-entry

Class Description

The purpose of the American Red Cross WSI Re-entry course is to allow previous Water Safety instructors and other qualified swimming instructors to participate in a modified and abbreviated instructor course to become current American Red Cross Water Safety instructors.

Audience

Re-entry is for former American Red Cross Water Safety instructors whose authorizations have expired for no longer than 2 years.
Crossover is for current swimming instructors from other organizations (see list below under prerequisites).

Prerequisites

Be at least 16 years of age
Possess one of the following credentials:
1. - Proof of former American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification (expired by no more than 2 years)
  - Evidence of current external credentials that show the participant has successfully completed a formalized swimming instructor course with one of the following organizations:
    - - Canadian Red Cross
      - YMCA of the USA
      - National Safety Council/Ellis & Associates, Inc.
      - American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI)—Starfish Aquatics Institute
      - American Swim Coaches Association—SwimAmerica
      - American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD)
      - Others as determined by the local Preparedness and Health and Safety Services Aquatics or Service Delivery representative
Successfully complete the pre-course session on the first day of class:
1. - Swim the following strokes consistent with Level 4:
    - - Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke – 25 yards
      - Butterfly – 15 yards
- - Back float for 1 minute (floating or sculling)
  - Tread water for 1 minute

Certification Requirements

Complete the online Orientation to the Swimming & Water Safety Program
Attend all class sessions
Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam

Certification Issued

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification (WSI) valid for 2 years

Class Transfers – The class transfer fee is $75 and registered participants are required to submit a Transfer Request online at least 48 hours prior to the original class date. Transfer class must be completed within 60 days of the original class date.

No Refunds – Training deposits are nonrefundable and No refunds will be issued once course fees have been submitted. If a participant is unable to pass the prerequisites or final exams the participant may transfer to a class at a later date (if available). If a participant is absent from any scheduled class days or times, the participant will not be offered a transfer or refund of any kind.

No Visitors – Only registered participants are allowed on the pool deck or in the classrooms during training. All visitors including parents must wait in the parking lot.

Cancelled Classes – Safe Swim reserves the right to cancel classes as needed. In the event a class is canceled registered participants will be offered a transfer to a different class free of charge or a full refund of the training deposit.
